7 Day trekking group tour
to Tobavarchkhili Lakes

Plan your summer adventure now on the Tobavarchkhili lake. Trek to Tobavarchkhili lakes follows the most spectacular mountainous path in all of Georgia, we hike across rivers, cross two mountainous passes at the elevation of 3000m, walk into the sub-tropical forests, and see Georgia’s most stunningly beautiful lakes of Tobavarchkhili. The total distance of the trek is 45 km. The route follows very rug terrain of bushes, long grasses, goes over the Rocky Mountains and snow glaciers. In the last days, we will travel from high mountains to the Black Sea resort and relax there for one day. 

Itinerary:

Day 1: Tbilisi-Mukhuri village – Shepherd Hut 2

  Moderate, 340 km by comfortable vehicle, 25 km by soviet truck 

  • In the morning, we will meet you at your hotel/airport and then depart by a comfortable transport for Mukhuri, a village located in the Western region of Georgia -Samegrelo. After 3 hours driving, we reach the village Mukhuri. From here, we continue our journey by a Soviet truck on off-road. We will drive for 3 hours by Soviet Truck and then reach our final destination by car for this day. Afterward, we hike for 1 km and set up our camp near Shepherd Hut 2 at the elevation of 1900 m. Overnight in Tents.

Day 2: Shepherd Hut 2 – Okhoje Lake (Small Tobavarchkhili lake) 

Hard, Walking distance 10 km, 7 hours

  • After breakfast, we will hike towards Okhoje lake which is also known as Tobavarchkhili lake. Tobavarchkhili lakes literally mean silver lakes. They are alpine lakes feed by melting snow and glaciers and surrounded by high mountainous of Egrisi. This day we follow a narrow mountainous path through the vast forest and alpine meadows with beautiful flowers. We cross small mountainous rivers and walk near the rocky Mountains. Finally, we hike up to the Okhoje pass at the elevation of 2750m. From here, you can enjoy picturesque panoramic views of the Okhoje lake and surrounding mountains. We descend towards lake through walking slope snowfields. Overnight in Tents.

Day 3: Okhoje Lake – Tobavarchkhili lake

Hard, 4 km to Big Toba lake, 3 hours

  • In the early morning, we start our adventure again. We hike up to the second pass of Greater Toba at the elevation of 2900m. The trail goes over the rocks, stones, and snowfields. The distance to Greater Toba is 4 km and takes 3 hours to complete. After reaching Greater Tobavarchkhili lake, we take a short break here and rest near the lake.  

Day 4: Tobavarchkhili lake-Didi Ghele-Lake Kaliashi-Tovarchkhili lake

Moderate, 10 km walking, 4 hours

  • This day we have our camp near the Tobavarchkhili lake. In the morning, we explore surrounding areas of the lake, hike up to nearby mountains and follow downstream of the river. You also can into the lake. The water is fresh but very clean and fresh. Greater Toba lake is an alpine lake surrounded by open, alpine meadows and rocky Mountains. Amongst the locals, it is known as Chitagvala’s Toba which literally in Megrelian language means Red Mountain. After rest, we take an optional detour and visit small lakes of Didi Ghele and lake Kaliashi. Overnight in tents on the bank of Tobavarchkhili lake

Day 5: Big Tobavarchkhili lake – Campsite near Jolora river

Hard, Walking distance  14 km, 8 hours

  • At dawn, we start our hiking. This day is relatively long and requires covering 14 km rough terrain. From the lake, we descend into the Magana valley. The pathway is very narrow and requires careful hiking. On our way, we also visiting stunning Toba waterfall. After we pass local shepherd, we follow downstream of river Magana.  Here hiking becomes relatively easier until it reaches the Jalara river. At the confluence of Jalara and Magana rivers hiking becomes quite hard because of narrow path through huge stones, forest, and bushes. We camp at the bank of Jalara river and have a campfire here. Overnight in Tents.

Day 6: Campsite near Jolora river – Kirnakhona Touristic Shelter – Skuri village – Kutaisi

Hard, Walking dist. 12 km, 5 h. 20 km driving by Soviet Big Truck, 70 km driving by minibus

  • In the morning, we will continue our journey. Here we hike into the sub-tropical forests of moss-covered trees and stones. If you come to this place in August, you can taste wild dewberry and nuts grown naturally in the forest. When we reach Kirnakhona touristic shelter, you can take a deep breath – we finish our trekking. From here we will travel by the Soviet Truck to village Skuri, and then by a comfortable vehicle to Kutaisi.  Overnight at guesthouse in Kutaisi.

Day 7:  Kutaisi-Uplistsikhe-Mtskheta-Tbilisi

240 km driving by a minibus, 4 Hours Driving

  • In the morning, we will visit the Bagrati Cathedral (11th c) and Gelati monastery complex (12th), which are UNESCO World Heritage sites.  Then we will travel to Baia winery, a small, family-owned winery which produces one the of best organic wines in Georgia. Here you will taste 3 different Georgian wines. Afterward, we will travel to Mtskheta – The ancient capital of the early Georgian kingdom is located 20 km away from Tbilisi and offers visitors lovely streets, shops, and houses with balconies for exploring and enjoying. 
    In the evening, we travel back to Tbilisi.
