Trekking to Kelitsadi lake offers a unique experience in Caucasus mountains. You will walk into the Truso valley characterized with travertines, hot mineral waters, abandoned villages and towers, then hike to the alpine meadows and finally reach Keli Volcanic area. It is a barren, rocky place without any sign of life. Here is located several lakes including Kelitsadi lake. From up there you will a very nice view over high Mountains including Sherkhota mountain, Mount Kazbegi. 

Itinerary:

Day 1 : Tbilisi-Ananuri-Truso valley -Keli Plateau 

  • In the morning, we will meet you at your hotel and drive to the north-eastern region of Georgia- towards Kazbegi. On our way, we stop at Anunuri Castel Complex which is a medieval architectural complex unites two churches, several towers, and defense walls. Then we drive across the military highway and arrive in Truso valley.   We get off our transport and start hiking near village Okrokana. At first, we follow a car road but in one hour we hike on a steep slope and reach a plateau of green alpine fields. We set up our first camp here.

  • Overnight in Tents.

Day 2 : Keli Plateau- Kelitsadi lake 

  • At the dawn, we start our hiking. The pathway follows an unmarked trail between two volcanoes of Greater Khorisari and Lesser Khorisari. We cross our first pass here at the elevation of 3210 m. We continue our hiking in a rough terrain of rocks, stones, and steep slopes. After a hard climb up, we reach Khorisari Pass at the elevation of 3425m. Here we take short breaks and then descend to the Kelitsadi lake.

  • Overnight in Tents on the bank of Kelitsadi lake.

Day 3 : Kelitsadi Lake-Ketrisi-Okrokana

  • In the morning, we hike up to the High Eli Pass at the elevation of 3420 m and then descend to the Esi river valley. Here we follow downstream of the river into the canyon and reach the village Ketrisi in Truso valley. Here we relax, take snacks and have a lunch. Afterward, we walk on the car road back to Okrokana village. The road follows Tergi river gorge and bypass some abandoned villages and towers. Near Okrokana, our transport will wait for us to take to Tbilisi.

Please note:

  • This hiking tour is very demanding, so good physical conditions of hikers are essential and required. We camp in nature and overnight in the tents, so for nights, it will be chilly for you. Please, take into consideration that the tour is subject to weather conditions and might be changed.
