5-Day Trekking in Javakheti is full of adventure. This is an off-beaten path trek where virtually you cannot spot any tourists wandering around the mountains. But the landscape and culture heritage of this region is one of the most brilliant one in the whole of Georgia. Here you can see and enjoy the most distinctive type of mountains: full of lakes and flowers, the Highest mountain in Lesser Caucasus in Georgia, with no forest, or any trees, and with so many rocks and stones, Javakheti seems like another planet from the universe. Here you will see one of the biggest lakes in Georgia –Paravani Lake. Also, you will hike to the highest point of Javakheti - Mount Great Abuli, with a height of 3,300 meters above sea level, from here you can see all Javakheti Plateau just below of you. In addition to different nature, Javakheti area has also preserved artifacts dating back to the Paleolithic and Eneolithic periods, sites, settlements, barrows, fortresses, and ruins of cultural and historical monuments compromise the relics of times past. The remains of the Paravani Caravanserai built of hewn stone and brick can be found here.

A magnificent 5-day Voyage to Javakheti area will treat you four incredible days of scenic trekking. Hiking through alpine meadows, rocks, and stones, you will get an up-close look at Javakheti Plateau from Mount Didi Abuli.





Day 1: Tbilisi – Tsalka-Madatafa Lake-Madatafa Mountain-Akhalkhalaki


Walking Distance 18km, 1 day, starting elevation 2000 m, maximum elevation 2714 m.


  • Your adventure starts at your hotel. In the morning, we will come to your place of staying and drive to Javakheti region. The road takes 4 hours, after passing Paravani pass, we arrive in Javakheti area where our trekking adventure awaits for us.

  • This day we will hike to Madatapa Mountain. Mountain Madatapa is a cone-shaped mountain of volcanic origin, from which a scenic panorama of the Javakheti Plateau and the Samsari Range opens up. At the top of the mountain, the remains of a circular megalithic construction can be found. The road is a moderate difficulty, and 5 hours takes to finish the trek.  The route starts from the village of Sameba and heads towards the eastern bay of the Lake, turning eastward to pass a shepherds’ camp and ending at a plateau 2300 meters above sea level. The trail returns via the same route.

Day 2: Akhalkalaki – Shaori Megalith Fortress-Mount Great Abuli 


Walking Distance  15 km, Starting elevation 2003 m, maximum elevation 2800


  • In the early morning, we pack our backpacks and go for difficult trekking. We are hiking up to the highest mountain in Lesser Caucasus mountain range in Georgia. Before reaching the peak you will explore ancient megaliths of Shaori.  These megaliths similar to Stonehenge dates back to 2nd millennium B.C. and is situated at 2752 m on the way of Mount Abuli. The pre-Christian cyclopean structure leads its visitors to a mystical environment. We camp in the alpine meadows. 

  • Overnight in tents.


Day 3:  Mount Great (Didi) Abuli – Akhalkalaki


Walking Distance 18 km, Starting elevation 2800, maximum  3,330 m, ending elevation 2005 m


  • After waking up in the tents, we continue our trekking up to Mount Abuli. The views from Didi Abuli is spectacular, You can see and enjoy all of the Javakheti plateau and surrounding mountains.  After tasting and conquering one of the highest peaks of Lesser Caucasus mountains, we will hike down to the villages, and drive to Akhalkalaki for overnight.

Day 4: Akhalkalaki-Kumurdo-Gogasheni-Vardzia


Walking Distance 7 km, min elevation 1348, maximum elevation 1745


  • In the morning, we will drive from Akhalkalaki to Kumurdo village, from where we will start hiking. The route to Vardzia proper runs southwest from Kumurdo village, via the Dankali settlement, toward Gogasheni village. Here you can enjoy with an impressive view over Tmogvi ravine. Totally, we will hike 7 km, and reach Gogasheni village. From here we will hike to Chachkari village, and eventually to rock-hewn cave monastery complex – Vardzia.

  • Overnight at Guesthouse in Vardzia.


Day 5: Vardzia -Upper Tmogvi-Tmogvi-Tbilisi


HIking Distance 16 km, Duration 6 hours, Driving Distance 300 km, Duration 3 Hours, 


  • In the morning, we will hike to Upper Tmogvi village from Vardzia. Once again, this day will leave Touristic crowded places, and start to explore the hidden treasure of Javakheti. First, we visit Chachkari village where you can see already very rare Darbazi-style houses with flat earthen roofs.

  • Afterward, we will hike to upper Tmogvi village, which is now a forgotten and abandoned village but still a church and graveyard can be seen. Afterward, you will explore Tmogvi fortress. After Tmogvi, you will travel to Tbilisi. 



Please note:


  • On the trekking trail, we may encounter shepherd dogs. They sometimes bark and scare hikers. If you have any problems regarding this issue, please avoid choosing this trek.

  • This holiday involves a considerable amount of walking and may not be suitable for those with walking difficulties.

  • We reserve the right to alter routes without prior notice due to weather and road conditions.

  • Once you have booked your tour, a comprehensive dossier will be sent to you with a more detailed day-by-day itinerary, flight details, visa requirements and helpful information on what to pack.

Our Guides: a knowledgeable, local, English-speaking guide leads all walks and treks. You will have two local guides in case the number of travelers will exceed 10.


Accommodation: We stay at basic guesthouses in the mountains. Please take into consideration that our treks lead you into the remote areas, and thus accommodation for some treks may not be so comfortable as in Tbilisi or elsewhere. Individual travelers are, in good consultation, classified with other single travelers of the same sex. You can book a single room at the applicable supplement.


Payment: If booking more than 10 weeks before departure a deposit of 20 % of the whole fee will need to be paid at the time of booking with the full amount payable at 10 weeks prior to departure. The deposit applies to adults and children. If you are within 10 weeks of travel then the full balance of the holiday will be payable.
